Exeter lock in rising Saffa prop

South African loosehead prop Ethan Burger has committed his future to Exeter Chiefs after signing a contract extension with the Premiership side.

The 25-year-old joined the English club midway through last season from Tuks at the University of Pretoria and has quickly worked his way into the senior setup, making 12 appearances so far.

Burger said staying at Exeter was an easy choice.

“It was an easy decision to stay, I think we’re building something really special here at Chiefs, which I’m grateful to be a part of.”

He also praised the club’s support base and made it clear he wants to help drive Exeter back towards success.

“The support and backing we get from our fans is unmatched. I’d love to be a part of giving back to them by securing results that we as a club strive for.

“I’ve already learned so much, but it’s only the tip of the iceberg. I’m excited to see how I can push on from here as an individual player and as part of this squad.”

Director of rugby Rob Baxter believes Burger is only scratching the surface of his potential.

“Ethan is a young, dynamic and powerful prop forward, who is clearly improving with each minute he spends on the field,” said Baxter.

“We see an awfully bright future for him.”

Baxter also highlighted Burger’s growing influence as a modern-day loosehead who offers impact beyond the scrum.
