Skinstad fighting to save French club

Bob Skinstad’s French team is teetering on the brink of collapse.

The former Springbok captain and All Blacks great Andrew Mehrtens took control of the once-mighty Béziers club 18 months ago, with ambitions of recreating the fairytale rise of La Rochelle.

But the dream has quickly turned ugly.

Béziers sit second from bottom in France’s ProD2 with just three matches left to save themselves from a relegation playoff.

The turmoil has stretched far beyond results.

Former coach Pierre Caillet was removed before later receiving a suspended prison sentence for domestic violence.

That sparked backlash inside the squad, with dozens of players reportedly signing an open letter demanding his return.

The season has since unravelled further, including reports of a car park brawl and car chase after one defeat, followed by a humiliating 71-0 demolition against league leaders Vannes.

“We came in expecting passion,” Skinstad admitted.

“But not the level of complexity and the hex, if you like, that a history of 25 years of non-performance has put on the club.”

Despite the chaos, Skinstad insists he remains committed to the long-term project.

“This is an anxious time but that’s what the jeopardy of French sport is all about. We are in a difficult moment but fully committed to the project.”

But the pressure is mounting fast.

Last weekend, Béziers blew a late lead against Provence after conceding a decisive intercept try in the final minute.

“It was gut-wrenching,” said Skinstad.

“Games like that always weigh heavily on me. I so want the guys to do well.”
