Sharks look abroad for experienced No 10

The Sharks are reportedly exploring two overseas options as they look to recruit an experienced flyhalf ahead of next season.

Rapport understands that coach JP Pietersen is in talks with seasoned internationals James O’Connor and Tommaso Allan.

O’Connor signed a one-year deal with the Leicester Tigers in June last year after replacing Handré Pollard, who returned home to the Bulls.

The 35-year-old Wallabies playmaker would be available from July should negotiations with the Sharks be finalised.

JP: Sharks still learning to win

Italy’s Allan has been with Perpignan since 2023 and signed a two-year extension in June 2024. The 32-year-old nephew of former Springbok hooker John Allan would reportedly be available from July if a deal is struck.

The Sharks’ interest in an experienced pivot follows the departure of Jean Smith, who is set to join Benetton at the conclusion of the Vodacom URC.

Smith qualifies to represent Italy and could potentially replace Allan at Test level.

The need to bolster the flyhalf ranks also comes amid news that the versatile Luan Giliomee is heading to the Bulls.

Pietersen is unsure about the full-time availability of Jordan Hendrikse due to potential Springbok commitments.

The Sharks boast Junior Springbok Vusi Moyo and 29-year-old Siya Masuka in their ranks, but Pietersen is keen on securing a seasoned general to help bring control and direction to the Sharks’ attack.
