Williams gone! Sharks confirm star’s exit

The Sharks have confirmed that Springbok scrumhalf Grant Williams is leaving the club at the end of the season.

The fleet-footed No 9 will take up a contract in Japan.

His contract runs out in June 2026, with the switch set to take effect immediately after the current campaign.

Williams’ departure comes at a crucial time for the Sharks, who are in the middle of a rebuilding phase under new management.

The dynamic scrumhalf has been a key figure in their system, and his exit leaves a significant gap — one that is expected to be filled by Jaden Hendrikse and Ross Braude going forward.

Importantly, the move is not expected to impact his standing with the Springboks.

Head coach Rassie Erasmus has consistently shown a willingness to select players based in Japan and Europe, meaning Williams remains firmly in the national picture.

The 29-year-old was one of the Boks’ most trusted scrumhalves over the past year, featuring in 11 of their 14 Tests – underlining his importance at Test level.

Reports earlier this year indicated that Williams had already travelled to Japan to familiarise himself with the environment ahead of the switch.

His destination club has not yet been publicly confirmed, but his move to the Japanese top flight is now locked in.
