Super Rugby to lose another team?

A Super Rugby Pacific club may not be part of next year’s tournament.

According to the New Zealand Herald, Moana Pasifika’s future is hanging in the balance after owners Pasifika Medical Association (PMA) informed players and staff that it will honour its financial commitments for the remainder of the 2026 campaign before stepping away.

That decision leaves Moana Pasifika at risk of dropping out of the competition in 2027 unless a new owner can be secured.

Running costs for the club are believed to be between NZ$10-million (R96-million) and NZ$12-million (R115-million) per year, presenting a significant hurdle for any potential buyer.

The Herald reports that efforts to sell the club have already proven difficult. A sales document was circulated late last year, but no suitable buyer was found.

There had been discussions involving former All Black Ali Williams and his wife, Anna Mowbray, though those talks did not progress.

However, there is still a glimmer of hope. A consortium led by former Moana Pasifika chief executive Pelenato Sakalia is reportedly exploring a possible bid to take over the licence.

Any takeover would need approval from NZ Rugby, which is expected to assume control of the licence from PMA.

Prospective owners would have to demonstrate both the financial backing and a sustainable business plan to ensure the club’s long-term future.

Super Rugby Pacific was reduced from 12 to 11 teams in 2025 following the closure of the Melbourne Rebels.
