Cheetahs coach Frans Steyn believes his side can still salvage their SA Cup campaign despite a costly defeat to the Valke in Kempton Park.
The Free Staters surrendered a 24-7 lead to lose 43-36, slipping from third to fifth on the log with just two rounds remaining – and now face a fight to qualify for the Currie Cup Premier Division.
“It’s not what any of us planned,” Steyn told Netwerk24. “Obviously the Valke’s plan worked. Maybe we missed something, or whatever.
“We’ll go back and look at what we did wrong and see what we need to do right.”
Despite the setback, Steyn remained positive.
“I think before the weekend there was a good upward curve. We just have to keep building and keep believing in the plan and keep believing in each other. Hopefully we will come out on top.
“We have made it very difficult for ourselves at the moment, but I firmly believe with the players we have we can still get a good outcome from this SA Cup tournament.”
However, Steyn admitted the result demands accountability.
“It is obviously disappointing, but we have to look at ourselves, see where we went wrong as coaches and fix things.”
The Cheetahs now face must-win clashes against the Border Bulldogs and Griquas.
