Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide Could Crush Apple’s Foldable iPhone

Samsung just gave away its 2026 game plan inside its own software. The South Korean giant leaked designs for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and a never-before-sold Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide inside One UI 9 firmware files — a move that lines up perfectly with Apple’s expected entry into folding phones later this year. Here’s what the leaks tell us about how the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide foldable iPhone fight will actually play out, and why Samsung may have already won the opening round.

Samsung makes the first move in July

For seven years, Samsung has owned the book-style foldable market with almost no real competition. That changes in 2026. According to leaker Ice Universe on X, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide protective cases have already been spotted on Alibaba, which usually means the hardware design is locked in.

Samsung is expected to launch on July 22, 2026 at a Galaxy Unpacked event in London, breaking from its usual U.S. or Seoul venues.

We think the timing isn’t random. By landing two months before Apple’s September event, Samsung gets a clean window to define what a “wide” foldable should look like — before iPhone fans get a single hands-on with Cupertino’s version.

The Fold 8 Wide is the real surprise

The standard Z Fold 8 is a normal yearly upgrade — small camera tweaks, the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, a slightly less visible crease.

The Z Fold 8 Wide is the new thing. It abandons the tall, narrow shape Samsung has used since 2019 and uses a 4:3 aspect ratio screen instead — basically the same proportions as an iPad. When unfolded, it’s wider than it is tall.

Leaked dimensions put the device at just 4.3mm thick unfolded, which would make it thinner than Huawei’s Pura X Max — currently the only wide foldable on shelves and a China-only release.

If you’ve ever found the regular Z Fold’s narrow cover screen awkward to type on with one hand, the Wide version is meant to fix exactly that problem.

Samsung vs Apple’s Foldable iPhone

Here’s what makes this matchup interesting: Apple appears to have picked the same wider, passport-style design that Samsung is now copying. Apple’s foldable — increasingly rumored to launch as the iPhone Ultra rather than iPhone Fold — is expected to debut in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, with shipping possibly slipping into December.

The iPhone Ultra is expected to feature a 7.8-inch inner display, an A20 Pro chip, and what Apple insiders call a nearly invisible crease.

Here’s the side-by-side based on the most reliable leaks and supply-chain reports through May 2026:

Apple’s rumored iPhone Ultra may compete by reducing the biggest foldable complaints: visible creases, bulky design, and awkward software transitions. In addition, Apple’s ecosystem could attract users who skipped foldables before because they preferred staying inside iOS.

However, Samsung still holds key advantages. The Z Fold 8 Wide reportedly offers S Pen support, mature multitasking, and years of foldable software optimization. As a result, Samsung currently looks more prepared for power users and productivity-focused buyers.

Why supply could crush Apple’s plans this year

Specs are close. Pricing is close. What’s not clear is who can actually sell you a phone in 2026. Samsung has eight generations of foldable manufacturing experience and a mature supply chain. Apple, meanwhile, has reported production delays.

MacRumors flagged that mass production was pushed from June to August, and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has warned of shortages stretching into 2027.

Apple’s biggest challenge may not be hardware or software. Instead, production could become the real problem.

Foldables remain difficult to manufacture at scale because they require flexible displays, complex hinges, and strict durability testing. Samsung already has years of experience producing these devices, so it can move faster and ship larger volumes globally.

By contrast, Apple reportedly faces supply constraints and delayed production timelines. Consequently, early buyers may encounter limited stock, long shipping delays, and aggressive resale pricing during launch season.

Samsung z fold wide

In plain terms, you’ll likely be able to walk into a store and buy a Z Fold 8 Wide in July with cases and accessories already on the shelf. Getting an iPhone Ultra in September may mean pre-order races and weeks of waiting. That’s a real advantage for Samsung, especially with rumored trade-in deals and storage upgrade promotions at launch.

What this means for you

So what should you actually do with all this? It depends on what you’re willing to wait for. If you want a foldable in your hand this summer, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is the play — it’s the first wide foldable most Western buyers can actually purchase, the supply is there, and Samsung’s eight years of trial-and-error means fewer first-gen headaches. We’d lean here if you’re not already deep in Apple’s ecosystem.

If you live inside iMessage, iCloud, and the Apple Watch, waiting until September (or December) probably still makes sense — but go in with eyes open. Limited stock, a higher likely ceiling on price, and a brand-new software experience that Apple has never shipped at scale. That’s a different kind of bet than buying Samsung’s eighth-generation product.

FAQs

When does the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide launch?

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide on July 22, 2026, at a Galaxy Unpacked event in London, alongside the standard Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8.

How much will the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide cost?

Leaks point to a starting price around $1,999, in line with previous Z Fold generations. Higher-storage versions will cost more.

What’s the difference between the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Wide?

The standard Z Fold 8 keeps the tall, narrow book-style design Samsung has used since 2019. The Wide version uses a shorter, wider 4:3 aspect ratio that feels more like a small tablet when open and a regular phone when closed.

Will Apple’s foldable iPhone launch before the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide?

No. Samsung is launching first in July. Apple’s foldable — likely branded as the iPhone Ultra — is expected to debut in September 2026, with shipping possibly slipping to December.

Is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide better than the foldable iPhone?

On paper, the Z Fold 8 Wide has a bigger camera setup and S Pen support. The foldable iPhone is expected to have a nearly invisible crease and tighter iOS integration. Neither is clearly “better” — it depends on which ecosystem you already use.
