Schools wrap: Grey College lose three in a row

Grey College lost three successive matches for the first time since 2015, while Paarl Boys’ returned to winning ways.

Grey College, who had suffered shock defeats to down to Stellenberg and Australia’s St Joseph’s Nudgee College, were beaten 29-14 by Paarl Gim in Paarl.

Grey struck first through wing JG Horn, who capitalised on a spilled high ball, but Gimmies responded almost immediately as flyhalf Louis Koen sliced through the defence to level matters.

From there, the hosts took control. Hooker Charles Whitehead and captain Ethan Barker crossed before half-time to give Paarl Gim a 17-7 lead at the break, with their defence consistently shutting down Grey’s attacking efforts.

The home side added two more tries in the second half, while fullback Lamla Mgedezi’s effort proved a rare highlight for Grey in an otherwise frustrating outing.

Elsewhere in the Western Cape, Paarl Boys’ beat a spirited Wynberg 20-9 in Paarl, SACS claimed a 22-17 win over southern-suburb rivals Bishops at home, Boland Landbou edged Rondebosch 43-41 in a high-scoring encounter, and Stellenberg hammered Melkbosstrand 64-0.

In KwaZulu-Natal, Maritzburg College thrashed Pretoria Boys’ High 61-5, while Northwood edged DHS 17-14.

In the Eastern Cape, Selborne beat Graeme College 36-24, Outeniqua overwhelmed Pearson 62-0, Paul Roos defeated Grey High 28-15 in Gqeberha, and Dale edged Queen’s 31-29.

In the Free State, Welkom Gim beat Bethlehem Voortrekker 36-30, Diamantveld overpowered Upington 31-5, and Witteberg beat Hentie Cilliers 38-25.

In the Noordvaal, Garsfontein held off Affies 38-34, Noordheuwel beat KES 50-19, Jeppe edged Westville 29-28, and HTS Middelburg defeated Middelburg 15-12.
