Coach Heyneke Meyer says the SWD Eagles are waiting for SA Rugby to approve their prospective shareholder.
The former Bulls and Springbok boss, who took over in George last November, has quickly turned SWD into a competitive outfit.
The Eagles pushed the Pumas close in a 28-26 opening-round defeat at Outeniqua Park and beat Boland 33-24 in George. They currently sit third on the log after five rounds, with a Currie Cup Premier Division place in sight.
Off the field, though, Meyer admits the next step in their growth hinges on outside investment.
SWD are awaiting feedback from SA Rugby, who meet on 14 May, on whether prospective shareholder UXi Sport has received the necessary approval.
“The process is currently ongoing and everything looks good,” Meyer told Rapport.
The 58-year-old has made it clear the project in the Southern Cape goes far beyond results.
“At this stage of my career, it’s important for me to give back,” he said. “What makes it fun is that it’s a big project.
“It’s not just the SWD team. We’re looking at upgrading the stadium. We’re looking at establishing an academy, junior rugby and a pipeline. Even for women’s rugby.
“I like to put structures in place.”

Despite limited resources, Meyer has been encouraged by the response from players and the wider community.
“We don’t have a lot of things in place yet. For example, we don’t have a gym, but these guys are so grateful for everything,” he said. “It’s one of the nicest teams I’ve worked with. They just want to perform and get better.”
He has also seen growing support off the field.
“In the beginning, a lot of businessmen helped with the players’ salaries. Now sponsors are coming in and it’s becoming a community project,” Meyer said. “It gives you energy and makes you humble.”
