SA-raised coach to help England unlock Boks

Byron McGuigan has been appointed to Steve Borthwick’s coaching staff on a full-time basis ahead of the inaugural Nations Championship.

The Namibia-born, South Africa-raised former Scotland centre first linked up with England during last year’s tour to Argentina and the USA while continuing in his role as defence coach at the Sale Sharks.

From next month, McGuigan will take up a permanent position with England, with responsibilities that include collision skills, the aerial contest and assisting the back three.

“Byron is an excellent addition to our coaching group,” Borthwick said. “Since arriving with us last summer, he has made a strong impact through his detailed understanding of the game and the energy he brings.

“We’re excited about the contribution he will continue to make.”

McGuigan enjoyed a successful playing career with Sale and earned 10 Test caps for Scotland after qualifying through his father.

His appointment strengthens England’s coaching group as Borthwick looks to revive a side that endured a poor Six Nations campaign, finishing fifth with just one win.

England open their Nations Championship campaign against the Springboks at Ellis Park on 4 July before facing Fiji and Argentina.

McGuigan’s promotion is the latest South African link in the England setup.

Earlier this week, Pretoria-born Benhard Janse van Rensburg was named in England’s training squad ahead of becoming eligible on residency grounds in July.
