The Blitzboks got their SVNS World Championship title defence off to a winning start, beating Uruguay in their tournament opener in Hong Kong.
The South Africans edged the South Americans 12-7 in a tightly-contested, but often scrappy clash.
Tristan Leyds opened the scoring in the sixth minute when he breached the Uruguay defence with speed and power to signal the Blitzboks’ intent.

Selwyn Davids then stepped his way past a number of Uruguay defenders to extend the Blitzboks’ lead. Leyds converted this time to give South Africa a 12-0 half-time lead.
But that’s ultimately where the scoring stopped for the Blitzboks as Uruguay got a foothold in the clash and started dominating. They were rewarded on the stroke of full-time when Diego Ardao dotted down. Juan Manuel Tafernaberry added the extras.
The Blitzboks next take on Spain at 8:49am.
