Google just renamed its Android AI push to Gemini Intelligence and rolled out an agentic update that can build your shopping cart, fill out forms, and write your voice messages — all without you tapping a thing. The reveal landed at The Android Show on May 12, ahead of next week’s Google I/O developer conference, and it’s Google’s biggest swing yet at Apple before WWDC. Here’s what’s actually arriving on your phone, and the parts worth caring about.
What Gemini Intelligence Actually Is
Gemini Intelligence isn’t a new app. It’s an umbrella name for a bundle of AI features that will live inside Android itself, starting with the Samsung Galaxy S27 and Google Pixel 10 this summer.
The pitch from Android boss Sameer Samat is blunt: “We’re transitioning from an operating system to an intelligence system,” he said on LinkedIn. In plain terms, your phone is supposed to stop being a stack of apps you tap through and start being something closer to an assistant that taps for you.

That shift matters because agentic AI — AI that takes actions on your behalf rather than just answering questions — is the next battleground between Google, Apple, and OpenAI.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the rollout on X, posting that Gemini can now “automate multi-step tasks across apps and Chrome, fill out forms in a single tap, [and] turn spoken thoughts into polished text with Rambler.” That’s the headline. The details are where things get interesting.
The Five Features You’ll Actually Notice
Google packed Gemini Intelligence with five upgrades, and they’re not all equal. Some you’ll use every day without thinking about it. Others sound flashy but only kick in if you opt into specific apps. We’ll walk through each one:

App Automation
This is the big one. You can show Gemini your grocery list in the Notes app, and it’ll build a delivery cart in another app for you.
You can snap a photo of a travel brochure and ask Gemini to find a similar tour on Expedia for six people.
The whole thing runs on what Google calls “screen context” — Gemini reads what’s on your display and acts from there. For now, it works inside food delivery, rideshare, and travel apps.
Magic Cue
The second piece is the one that quietly does the most work. It pulls context from your messages, email, and calendar to suggest replies and actions before you ask.
Your friend texts asking when your flight lands. Magic Cue surfaces the answer from your Gmail. We’d call it the feature that sounds creepy on paper and useful in practice, which is exactly why Google built a privacy framework around it — more on that in a minute.
Rambler
A Gboard upgrade that fixes voice dictation. Most of us don’t speak in clean sentences — we pause, repeat, swap languages mid-thought. Rambler strips the “ums” and self-corrections and outputs a clean message. Google says audio is processed in real time for transcription and is not stored, which heads off the obvious privacy question before users even ask.
Intelligent Autofill
This rounds out the practical stuff. Using Gemini’s Personal Intelligence, Android will fill in those tiny form fields across apps and Chrome — addresses, dates, account numbers you’ve stored elsewhere. Connecting Gemini to Autofill is strictly opt-in, so nothing flips on without your say-so.
Create My Widget
And finally, this feature lets you describe a home screen widget in plain English. Tell it you want a weekly meal planner or a weather widget that only shows wind speed, and it builds one.
The Privacy Question We All Have
Letting an AI tap around your phone raises an obvious problem: what happens if it does something you didn’t ask for? Google addressed this with a separate post on its security blog. Gemini needs your confirmation before any purchase.
It only touches apps you’ve explicitly allowed. A persistent notification chip sits at the top of your screen anytime Gemini is acting, and you can’t dismiss it until the task finishes. The Android Privacy Dashboard is also getting an upgrade to show which AI assistants were active in the last 24 hours.

We don’t want to oversell the safeguards, though. AI-driven attacks on user accounts are no longer theoretical — Google’s own threat team recently confirmed the first AI-built zero-day exploit, designed to slip past two-factor authentication on a popular admin tool.
The more your phone does for you, the more your phone is worth attacking. Samat said that “the human is always in the loop,” which sounds reassuring until you remember the loop is only as good as the prompt that triggers it.
Why Now, and What’s Coming Next
The timing isn’t a coincidence. Apple is expected to show a Gemini-powered overhaul of Apple Intelligence at WWDC in June, and Google wants the narrative locked in first.
The rollout starts on Pixel and Galaxy phones this summer, then expands later this year to Wear OS watches, Android Auto cars, Android XR glasses, and Googlebook — Google’s new Gemini-built laptop, also unveiled at the show. Android Auto alone reaches over 250 million vehicles, which gives Gemini more surfaces than most operating systems ever had.
Phones and cars aren’t the only surfaces, either. DeepMind has been testing an AI-powered mouse pointer that moves and clicks based on what you’re trying to do, not just where your hand goes — a sign Google wants AI inside every input layer.
For anyone who’s never touched an AI tool, the simplest way to think about this: your phone is being asked to handle the friction. Filling forms, copying details between apps, cleaning up a voice note — Gemini wants those moments. Whether we end up trusting it with them is the real question, and that one’s going to take a summer of testing to answer.
