JP: Sharks still learning to win

Sharks coach JP Pietersen says failing to reach the Vodacom URC playoffs is “hugely disappointing”.

The Durban-based side’s slim hopes of a top-eight finish were ended by a 33-28 defeat to Edinburgh at Hive Stadium on Friday night,

It left the Sharks 10th on the log and playing for pride in their final two matches against Benetton and Zebre at Kings Park.

“Obviously, I am very disappointed with the result,” Pietersen said. “Two matches on the road that I felt we could have won, especially this one that seemed closer.

“The top eight is out of reach now and by our standards to finish outside of the top eight is hugely disappointing.”

REPORT: Second-half Edinburgh blitz eliminates Sharks

The Sharks started well in Scotland, scoring early through winger Edwill van der Merwe and later taking control again in the second half when prop Vincent Koch powered over to give them a 21-14 lead.

“I felt we had control in the first half. We started well, scored a good try. In saying that we gave away two tries in the first half through soft moments,” Pietersen said.

“At times we didn’t manage the game well. We gave away soft penalties and easy exits in our half.”

Edinburgh struck decisively in the final quarter, scoring three tries to wrestle back control, with the Sharks left chasing the game.

“When we got the ball, we didn’t kick it out, which would have given us control. We kept it in play which put us under pressure and resulted in them scoring,” Pietersen added.

“They scored soon after with a quick kick-off. We could have done better by anticipating that.”

The loss was compounded by injury, with scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse leaving the field in the 25th minute due to a concussion.

“Losing Jaden in the first half was difficult,” said Pietersen. “Someone with his experience, his game management during that pressure cycle would have been important for us.”

Despite the setback, Pietersen remains focused on the bigger picture.

“We are learning as a group. This group is learning to win. My job as coach is to get this group of players to believe and to convert these opportunities into winning games. I am committed to doing this.”

He singled out 18-year-old fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya for praise.

“Siyaya impressed me yet again. This kid is unreal!”

“This is what you want from our players … He is the real deal.”
