English club to take Cheetahs’ URC spot?

The Cheetahs are facing increased competition for a place in the Vodacom URC, with a London club reportedly in advanced discussions with tournament organisers.

The Cheetahs were axed from the competition when it rebranded from the Pro 14 to the URC in 2021 and have since had to be satisfied with playing in Europe’s second-tier EPCR Challenge Cup.

According to Rapport, the Free State side could join the URC should the Welsh Rugby Union reduce its number of regional clubs from four to three ahead of the 2027-28 season.

But it is far from a foregone conclusion.

English Championship log-leaders the Ealing Trailfinders are also seeking a place in the competition.

Ealing have dominated England’s second tier in recent years and are on course for another title after winning all 25 of their Championship matches this season.

Despite their success, promotion to the Premiership has remained blocked because their Vallis Way stadium does not meet the RFU’s minimum standards criteria.

The London-based club could appeal strongly to URC organisers because of the commercial opportunities attached to expanding into the English capital.

London Irish, with new financial backing, have also reportedly explored the possibility of relaunching through either the English Premiership or URC after the club collapsed in 2023.

However, any potential move for Ealing and London Irish could be blocked by the RFU, which reportedly wants to keep both clubs within the English rugby system rather than see them drift into a cross-border competition.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s Black Lion, who compete in the Challenge Cup, are believed to have influential backing as the URC weighs up future expansion options.
