Former All Blacks wing Cory Jane has urged NZ Rugby to act quickly to prevent one of the country’s rising stars from joining the overseas exodus.
Hurricanes wing Fehi Fineanganofo has been one of the standout players in Super Rugby Pacific this season, leading the try-scoring charts with 15.
However, the 23-year-old is set to join the Newcastle Red Bulls in England on a two-year deal at the end of the campaign.
Fineanganofo is just one in a string of young and talented New Zealand players who have opted to take up offers abroad.
Jane, the Hurricanes assistant coach, wants NZ Rugby to step in to prevent Fineanganofo’s departure, which would rule him out of All Blacks selection.
“New Zealand need to do something,” Jane said on Sport Nation’s Scotty and Izzy show.
“They might not even look at him to be an All Black and then fair enough, let him go, but if they’re looking at him being an All Black, they’ve got to try and do something to get him out of his deal.
“He chose to go over there and he chose early, but he has his why – family and all that stuff – and he wants to provide, and that’s fair to him.”

Jane said of Fineanganofo: “His burst, his ability to catch the ball and go, he’s strong and I think the best thing about him is that he just wants to learn.
“It’s unfortunate that he’s going but we’ve just got to enjoy the next few weeks.”
