These Stormers don’t do blowouts

The bookmakers have overcooked the Stormers’ chances against Connacht, even if the Lions may justify favouritism up north, writes MARK KEOHANE.

Writing for TimesLIVE, Keohane says the weekend’s Vodacom URC fixtures will shape the race for home playoff spots, but the assumption of a big Stormers win in Cape Town is misplaced given the nature of the hosts’ season and the quality of their Irish opponents.

The Stormers have built their campaign on resilience rather than flair, grinding out 11 wins through accuracy and composure rather than attacking fireworks.

“It hasn’t been the flamboyant, exhibition-style Stormers of a year ago.”

Connacht, meanwhile, are far better than the perception in South Africa suggests. They have pushed the Stormers close before and possess the organisation and technical detail to stay in the contest.

“Don’t buy into the hype of a 20-point winning margin,” Keohane says.

Up north, the Lions have reason to believe.

The Glasgow Warriors may lead the league, but their record in South Africa is poor and their Investec Champions Cup exit has dented momentum.

“They are one from one in finals in South Africa, but only one from eight in league fixtures,” Keohane notes.

The Lions, meanwhile, “have to show the same maturity, discipline and composure that won them the SA Shield”.
