Former England utility back Ben Foden believes it would be good for rugby if France can topple the Springboks in the build-up to the 2027 World Cup.
Les Bleus have made a strong start to this year’s Six Nations, winning their opening two matches as they look to defend the title they reclaimed last season after Ireland’s back-to-back triumphs.
France will host the Springboks on 14 November as part of the new Nations Championship, offering an early marker ahead of the 2027 global showpiece.
Fabien Galthie’s side are currently third in the World Rugby rankings, behind the Boks and All Blacks, but having moved ahead of England.
KEO: Who’s running the hottest in the Six Nations
“They are two contrasting styles,” Foden told BoyleSports. “South Africa are a very structured, very physical side. France are like a 2010 New Zealand team – throwing balls out the back, offloads, Sonny Bill Williams down the middle.
“New Zealand dominated that era. But at the moment, with the way the game is played and the amount of kicking involved, structure does play a big part.”
EX-ITALY PROP: ‘Hungry’ Azzurri can shock France
The former England international added that a French victory over the Springboks would capture the imagination of fans worldwide.
“I’d love to watch South Africa vs France in the next two years. The world will be wanting France to win because they play such a ridiculous style of rugby. It’s a feast for the eyes and a proper spectacle.”
SA RUGBY: There must be a global calendar
In their most recent encounter, last November, the Boks overcame a first-half red card to emerge with an impressive 32-17 win in Paris.
The Boks also famously won a thrilling 2023 World Cup quarter-final 29-28 against hosts France.
