Maties took advantage of a new Varsity Cup law innovation to score two quick-fire tries against Shimlas in Bloemfontein.
Trailing 21-5 late in the first half, Maties winger Rynhardt van der Linden scored a seven-point, point-of-origin try in the corner to make it 21-12.
Maties then turned down a conversion attempt, instead opting for a tap on the opposition 22m line in line with where the try was scored.
And they managed to score another try within 120 seconds to add a further five points to their total.
Shimlas, though, went on to win the match 50-39.
