US government shutdown ends after 43 days as Trump signs funding bill

Trump signs a funding bill that ends the record 43-day government shutdown after weeks of political deadlock.

President Donald Trump has signed a government funding bill, formally ending the record 43-day shutdown that had disrupted public services across the United States, delayed wages for federal employees and caused significant disturbances at airports and food-aid centres.

The measure reached the White House shortly after passing the House of Representatives in a narrow 222–209 vote, largely along party lines.

Democrats had sought to include an extension of an enhanced tax credit aimed at reducing the cost of health insurance purchased through Affordable Care Act marketplaces. They refused to back a broader spending package that excluded this provision.

Republicans, however, argued that the tax credit issue should be addressed separately and maintained their position as negotiations stretched on, ultimately prevailing in the final agreement.
