US ends penny production after more than 230 years

The United States has struck its final penny after more than two centuries, ending production due to rising manufacturing costs and declining relevance.

The United States has ended production of the penny after 232 years, striking the final coin in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Treasurer Brandon Beach oversaw the last minting, following President Donald Trump’s order to stop producing the one-cent coin as part of government cost-cutting.

Although the penny will remain legal tender, roughly 300 billion coins are already in circulation.

The Mint says production costs have climbed to 3.69 cents per penny, making the coin increasingly impractical to manufacture.
