Toulon coach takes time-out

Pierre Mignoni is taking a mid-season break as Toulon head coach.

The decision comes following a defeat that dropped his team out of the Top 14 playoff places.

“Pierre Mignoni, director of rugby, wished to take a break this week and the club has of course accepted this legitimate request,” said Toulon.

The club’s statement did not say how long the former France scrumhalf will be out, nor did it give a reason for his request.

Toulon were fourth in the Top 14 before losing their last two matches. They fell at second-placed Pau on 1 February and then at home to Clermont last weekend.

That result, a first home loss since June 2024, allowed the visitors to climb into the top six and pushed Toulon down to eighth.

“Before talking about anyone else, the first responsibility is mine, and I take it because I have always done so,” Mignoni said on Saturday after the defeat.

“I’m giving myself 48 hours and then I’ll take responsibility.”

In the Top 14, only the top six teams from the regular season move into the playoffs where the two teams who finished top receive a passage passage directly to the semi-finals, while teams ranked third to sixth compete in qualifier playoffs.
