Smith’s surge built on Steyn masterclass

Chris Smith is lighting up the Vodacom URC, and he knows exactly who to thank.

The Lions flyhalf has surged past the 100-point mark this season, leading the competition charts after a clinical display in his side’s win over Edinburgh. But for Smith, the numbers only tell part of the story.

Behind the rise sits the influence of Springbok great Morné Steyn.

“I have been fortunate to work with Morné for the past five or six years,” Smith said. “He joined the Bulls when I was there, so we were competing with each other.

“Then he retired and I continued there for another year or two and we just built a really close relationship. He’s a really good family friend of ours.

“When I went overseas to France, he joined the Lions as kicking coach and now I’ve joined the Lions and we’ve been reunited. I’ve had a really good journey with him and it’s been special.

“You honestly couldn’t have a much better mentor.

“He’s probably one of the best ball strikers the game has ever seen. He ranks right up there.”

CASH: Lions want to change Joburg

Now 31, Smith is thriving back in South Africa after his stint abroad, embracing both the responsibility and rhythm of the Lions’ attacking game.

“It was just such a great opportunity,” he said. “I’ve loved my time here and I’m really enjoying my role. It’s been really good. I am loving my rugby at the moment.

“The Lions are known for playing a good attacking brand of rugby. It’s always been in their DNA. So it’s very cool to be a part of it and experience this great attacking brand.”

POLL: How many SA teams will make URC playoffs?

Smith’s boot will once again play a big role for the Joburg-based outfit as they look to back up their comprehensive 54-17 win over Edinburgh with victory over the Dragons at Ellis Park on Saturday.
