Rassie Erasmus has signed a multi-year deal to replace Steve Borthwick as England head coach.
Erasmus – who led the Springboks to World Cup glory in 2019 and 2023 – recently extended his contract through to the 2031 World Cup in the USA.
However, he will now not even attempt to win an unprecedented hat-trick of global titles in Australia next year after receiving an offer he “could not refuse” from England’s RFU.
Borthwick oversaw England’s worst-ever Six Nations campaign, with four defeats in five matches, including a first loss to Italy. The RFU believes Erasmus can engineer a turnaround similar to the one he masterminded with the Springboks after taking charge in 2018.
Personal reasons are also believed to have played a role, with Rassie’s beloved bulldog, Frank, keen to return to his roots in Britain.
Erasmus is set to formally resign from SA Rugby on April Fool’s Day.
