New league sues SA Rugby

The Mzansi Rugby League is taking SA Rugby and MyPlayers to court.

Officially launched last month and scheduled to begin in 2027, the MRL is positioning itself as a 16-team, nine-province competition offering salaries between R15,000 and R30,000 per month alongside full medical cover.

It has marketed itself as a pathway for players and coaches in regions traditionally excluded from South African rugby’s elite structures.

SA Rugby and MyPlayers – the players’ organisation – have criticised the venture, warning players against signing up and suggesting the league is unauthorised and unsafe.

The MRL strongly disputes those claims and on Friday confirmed it has filed a defamation suit, with the summons already issued.

“Every day that these false claims remain uncorrected, the damage to our business, our players, and the communities we serve continues to grow,” the league said in a statement. “Our players have the right to choose where they play rugby. Our communities deserve opportunities. And our league deserves to compete fairly without intimidation.”

BOTHMA: MRL not a rebel league

While the legal process unfolds, the MRL insists its focus remains on recruitment, securing venues and building a sustainable competition.

“The legal process will run its course, but our priority is clear – building a future where more South Africans can benefit from the game.”
