The Lions will be without a key Springbok for Saturday’s Vodacom URC match against the Stormers at Ellis Park.
Flank Ruan Venter has been sidelined after experiencing delayed concussion symptoms following last weekend’s 32-22 win over the Sharks.
Venter returned to action in that clash after serving a four-game suspension. Although he initially passed his HIA after coming off in the 39th minute, symptoms surfaced later.
“The only injury absentee is Ruan Venter. He came off in the game and passed his test, but then later on Sunday, he came back with symptoms,” said Lions defence coach Jaque Fourie.
“It’s one of those things; it’s unfortunate that he’s out. He’s vital for us in how we play, giving us momentum and stopping momentum.
“There are guys who are going to step into his shoes, like Batho [Hlekani]. He’s one of the guys who gives momentum and stops momentum; he just needs to pick up his hand again this weekend.”

Fourie indicated that Hlekani is likely to start at blindside flank, while changes are also expected at scrumhalf.
“There will be rotation. I think the game is going to be wet on Saturday; we are prepping for a wet game. Nico [Steyn] has a good kicking game and is very physical.
“We have got three amazing scrumhalves. With Krappie [Morne van den Berg] being with the Springboks, you always want to play him, and then we rotate Nico and Hash [Haashim Pead] to keep them fresh.”
