The Lions hope to show some Springbok spirit in Saturday night’s Vodacom URC match against Cardiff at the Arms Park.
Loose forward WJ Steenkamp says the Joburg-based outfit have taken heart from the Boks’ Rugby Championship fightback after their own heartbreak in the Currie Cup final.
“You have to be sad when you lose. If it’s not bad for you, you’re in the wrong business,” Steenkamp told Netwerk24, referring to the Lions’ 27-25 defeat to Griquas at Ellis Park last Saturday.
“What we saw in the Rugby Championship, especially with the Boks and also Australia, drove us this week. The Boks lost at Eden Park and then a week later beat the All Blacks 43-10. And with Australia too, we all saw what they did against the Springboks at Ellis Park [winning 38-22 after trailing 22-0].”

Steenkamp says the Lions are determined to bounce back in similar fashion.
“We put the final under the magnifying glass afterwards. It was a pass here or a mistake at a breakdown that cost us the game. These are things we’ll have to correct – especially in this tournament we’re going to play now, we must take our chances.”
The Lions will name their match 23 on Friday.
