Lions centre back in the dock

Bronson Mills’ court case has been postponed until next month after the Lions centre appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The 22-year-old faces an assault charge relating to an incident in Cape Town in October.

News24 reports the matter has now been postponed to 15 April after his legal team requested more time to submit representations for either the withdrawal of the case or diversion.

The request follows the submission of video evidence to the court. If the footage supports the written allegations made by the complainant and witnesses, the defence’s application will be dismissed and the matter will proceed to plea and trial.

Should the video evidence contradict those statements, the case could potentially be withdrawn.

Mills is expected to return to court on 15 April, and failure to appear could result in a warrant of arrest being issued.

The case stems from an incident in the early hours of 27 October at a house gathering in Cape Town. According to a statement previously provided by the complainant, Vega School student Marumo Selane, an argument broke out after he was accused of stealing salmon from the refrigerator.

Selane alleged that the confrontation escalated into a physical altercation outside the house. In his statement, he claimed he was punched several times and thrown to the ground before being kicked during the incident.

He later reported suffering a black eye, swelling to his lip and jaw, cuts to his face and wrists, and other bruising.

Mills handed himself over to police shortly after the allegations surfaced and made his first court appearance in November last year.

Despite the ongoing legal process, the midfielder has started the Lions’ last four Vodacom URC matches.

The Lions face the Glasgow Warriors at Ellis Park on 18 April, just three days after Mills’ next court date.
