Krappie to add new energy to Lions

Springbok scrumhalf Morne van den Berg could be thrust straight into the Lions lineup for their crucial Vodacom URC round 3 clash against Benetton in Treviso on Saturday.

Lions assistant coach Barend Pieterse confirmed that Van den Berg joined the squad in Italy on Tuesday.

“Krappie actually got here before we did,” Pieterse said.

“He looks rested and ready. He brings good energy and of course some fresh ideas as well – all the things he’s learnt while being away with the Springboks. It’s wonderful that he’s here.”

SMITH: Lions brace for Benetton beast

Nico Steyn started at scrumhalf in the defeats to Cardiff and Zebre, with Junior Springbok Haashim Pead featuring off the bench. But Van den Berg’s inclusion could provide the spark the Lions need to ignite their campaign and secure a first win of the new season.

The 27-year-old has made an impressive start to his international career, scoring three tries in four Tests for the Boks – the most recent coming in the 67-30 demolition of Argentina in the Rugby Championship last month.
