JP: Eben’s lifted Sharks’ standards

JP Pietersen says Eben Etzebeth has almost been like an extra coach for the Sharks during his 12-match ban.

Etzebeth returns to action for the first time since being found guilty of eye-gouging during the Springboks’ last Test of 2025 against Wales. He starts in the Sharks’ second row for Friday night’s last-16 EPCR Challenge Cup clash against Connacht in Galway.

“Eben is back, and it’s awesome to have him back,” Pietersen said. “Eben is a highly experienced guy and one of the great Springbok players.

“He’s been professional and slotted straight in, did his job, led well and helped where he could. He’s got a standard that he holds everyone accountable to and you can see the level within the group has risen to that standard.”

TEAM: Eben boost for weakened Sharks

Pietersen has made 13 changes to the Sharks starting lineup that beat Cardiff in Durban last week.

“We’ve got quite a few injuries,” he explained. “Some guys have niggles and others are training without being able to take contact.

“[Bok props] Ox [Nché] and Vinny [Vincent Koch] have done well for us so we’re starting with them.”

Bok captain Siya Kolisi remains sidelined, while the backline has also been hit, with Aphelele Fassi, Grant Williams, Jaco Williams, Jaden Hendrikse, Jurenzo Julius and Luan Giliomee on the injured list.

“Siya’s still on the rehab side,” said Pietersen. “He started running this week but he’s not ready yet. Jaden still has concussion and Jordan has a leg niggle. We’re a bit skinny among the backs but [Bok wing] Edwill [van der Merwe] is back, so that gives us a bit of a boost.”

Despite the disruptions, Pietersen expects a stern test from Connacht and has challenged his charges to lift their game.

“They’re a good side. They will definitely put us under pressure holding the ball. For us it’ll be about being disciplined in our defence … not giving penalties away and giving them territory.”
