JP Pietersen has thrown his support behind teenage fullback Luan Giliomee ahead of the Sharks’ crucial Vodacom URC clash with Munster.
Giliomee will start at Kings Park on Saturday in the absence of injured duo Aphelele Fassi (shoulder) and Jaco Williams (hamstring).
Pietersen believes the 19-year-old is ready for the step up.
“He’s a talented kid and it’s a great opportunity for him to showcase what he’s got,” Pietersen said. “He’s done well with the Blitzboks and has been in the SA U20 mix, so we’re excited to see what he can do.”

Pietersen highlighted Giliomee’s versatility and rugby intelligence.
“He can play nine, 10 or 15. He’s got vision, understands the game well and sees things ahead of time. He’s good under the high ball and has a solid kicking game.
“I’ve got a lot of faith in him. I’m really excited for the young guy and I’m sure he’ll do a great job on Saturday.”
TEAM: Rested Bok duo back for Sharks
Up front, Pietersen has rotated his front row, opting to start Phatu Ganyane, Fez Mbatha and Hanro Jacobs, while experienced Springboks Ox Nché and Vincent Koch are set to make an impact off the bench.
“It’s about giving us experience to close the game off,” Pietersen explained. “Phatu has scrummed really well against top opposition and deserves his start. Fez is back from injury and Hanro brings consistency.
“The three of them are scrumming nicely together, so hopefully they can continue by giving us a good performance on Saturday.”

Pietersen expects another tight contest between two teams who went toe-to-toe in last season’s URC quarter-final, which was decided in a penalty shootout.
“They’re a quality side with a strong culture,” he said. “They never give up and they showed that against us before. It’s going to be a proper contest again.”
With the Sharks chasing a playoff spot, Pietersen admitted the stakes are high.
“We’re focusing on Munster, but every game now is like a knockout match for us. We need to perform and get the result.
“We’re back at home and want to give the fans something to be proud of. The focus is on delivering a strong team performance. It’s going to be a real good contest from both teams.”
