Damian Willemse has revealed how instinct and analysis combined for his game-turning try against the Vodacom Bulls.
Trailing 7-0 at Loftus and down to 13 men for a period after two yellow cards, the Stormers needed a spark – and Willemse provided it with a perfectly timed run that led to a pivotal score.
“Obviously we do a lot of analysis, and there are spaces you see,” Willemse said. “I did see it during the week [when reviewing Bulls footage], and then in the game the opportunity presented itself.”
The Springbok playmaker described how the moment unfolded in real time.
“I made eye contact with Stef [Stefan Ungerer] and he picked me up – it was the perfect call from him,” he said. “I just hit the gap at the perfect time.
“Kudos to Stef for picking me up and throwing that ball right at the line and, yeah, I ran through.”
