Vodacom Bulls captain Johan Grobbelaar says Handré Pollard’s arrival has lifted the squad ahead of Saturday’s URC clash with Ulster. DYLAN JOHNSON reports.
The veteran flyhalf, who recently rejoined the Bulls after stints with Montpellier and the Leicester Tigers, is part of a 13-Springbok touring group for the Bulls’ three-match trip to Ireland and Scotland.
Grobbelaar said Pollard’s composure and experience will be vital as the team looks to build on bonus-point wins over the Ospreys and Leinster.
“He’s one of the best flyhalves in the world,” Grobbelaar said. “His calmness on the field will make a massive difference. He’s been up north and knows the wet conditions, so that experience will be key.
“It’s great having him back, he brings composure, leadership and a lot of energy to the group.”

Grobbelaar, who captains in the absence of the injured Marcell Coetzee, said the Bulls are determined to continue their strong start but expect a big test in Belfast.
“We’ve never won here,” he said. “Ulster are a physical side with great ball-carriers and a strong maul. If we can stop their momentum, we’ll be in the mix.”

The hooker added that the team has grown more comfortable touring in recent seasons.
“The first few years we didn’t travel well, but we’ve adapted to the conditions and schedule. If we can build on last season’s tour, we’ll be in a good position on the log.”

Grobbelaar acknowledged the challenge of converting chances, but believes the Bulls’ attacking form and new additions will keep them competitive.
“We’ve created a lot of opportunities, but we need to finish them. If we can tighten up on defence and be more clinical, we’ll give ourselves a good chance.”
