Former Junior Springbok flyhalf Jean Smith says his upcoming move from the Sharks to Benetton is the right step to revive his career.
The 22-year-old will leave the Sharks at the end of the season after five years with the club, having made six senior appearances – four in the Vodacom URC and two in the Investec Champions Cup – in a stint disrupted by injuries and stiff competition.
“It’s been a tough four years, and a lot has happened,” Smith told Rugby365. “It’s tough in the position I’m in at the Sharks. The competition is very strong and it’s difficult to get game time, especially if you cover one position.”
The move to Benetton also carries deep personal meaning. Smith was born in Treviso and played his junior rugby at the club before moving to South Africa.
“I actually played all my junior rugby until I was 10 years old at Benetton, so it’s a sentimental thing going back,” he said.
“As much as I love the Sharks, everyone walks their own path, and mine has directed me back to Benetton.”

The former Grey College pupil is the son of Franco Smith, former Springbok and current head coach of the Glasgow Warriors.
Eligible to represent both the Springboks and Italy, Smith says he would welcome either opportunity.
“It’s every rugby player’s dream to play at the highest level,” he said. “I’d love to play for the Springboks, but I would be very happy to wear the Italian jersey if the opportunity arises.”
