Eddie: Super Rugby’s decline has hurt All Blacks

Eddie Jones believes Super Rugby’s fading influence has played a role in the All Blacks losing their grip on the global game.

Once the sport’s great trend-setter, Super Rugby shaped how Test rugby was played, with New Zealand reaping the rewards during their dominant run between 2011 and 2015. But, according to Jones, that edge has dulled, and so too has the All Blacks’ authority.

“That’s the other thing that’s changed for New Zealand Rugby; Super Rugby was the greatest influence of World Rugby for a long period of time; whatever happened in Super Rugby basically set the trend for the game,” Jones said on the DSPN podcast.

“Unfortunately, Super Rugby has dropped in terms of status. We all know South Africa has left, and now it’s a competition that doesn’t have as much influence around the world.”

Jones pointed to the subtle “nuances” in the game that can swing power between nations, suggesting the current trends and laws have suited teams like the Springboks.

While New Zealand and Australia have introduced law innovations aimed at speeding up the game and reducing stoppages, Jones questioned their global impact.

“The changes the Super Rugby people have made are absolutely outstanding. They’ve shown a lot of courage, they’ve got a clear direction of how they want the game, but it doesn’t tend to influence World Rugby as much as it used to.”
