The Stormers are struggling to come to terms with the loss of captain Salmaan Moerat.
Coach John Dobson confirmed the towering lock will head to La Rochelle at the end of the season after accepting what he described as a massive offer from the French giants.
Dobson revealed Moerat had been central to the Stormers’ long-term leadership plans.
“We didn’t want him to leave us. Our plan was for him to be the captain for our Project 2029. He is a massive asset for the Stormers,” Dobson told Netwerk24.
The Stormers boss also leapt to the defence of his skipper amid overall criticism of his form and ability.
“I can’t understand why there is such nastiness towards him. He gives 100 million percent on the field and puts his body on the line in every match.
“Last year, we were 12th on the log at one stage and had to win four home games in a row. Do you remember the level of intensity and physical presence he brought?”

Dobson believes Moerat’s absence was keenly felt when the Stormers lost him early in last season’s quarter-final against the Glasgow Warriors.
“Given the physical standard he set, it was huge when we lost him,” he said.
Despite their disappointment, the Stormers ultimately chose not to block the move.
“He had an opportunity that will change his and his family’s lives,” said Dobson.
“We have a relationship with Salmaan where it’s not just about contracting. That’s why we agreed to his request, but with the door wide open for him to return.”
