Currie Cup conqueror now a Lions favourite

Eddie Davids is relishing his time at the Lions and has quickly become a fan favourite at Ellis Park.

There’s a certain irony to Davids’ rise in Joburg.

It’s been a journey built on humility, graft and seizing opportunity.

Loaned to the Lions after an impressive Currie Cup campaign, the 27-year-old has embraced Vodacom URC rugby with both hands, even if the welcome came with a few reminders of that final.

“Yeah, it was not easy; the banter was flowing for some time actually,” Davids remarked to News24. “They eventually got over it and made peace with it. I also came in peace; I didn’t come with any funny jokes because I know we beat them at their home ground. I was a bit cautious in approaching that situation; I didn’t want the guys to be too hard on me.”

On the field, Davids has quietly gone about cementing his place. His physicality and work rate have made him a reliable presence in the pack, while the step up to URC level demanded quick adaptation.

“It’s been a great opportunity and I try to approach it with humility and try to work hard every day.”
