Blitzboks run riot in Vancouver

The Blitzboks produced a dominant performance to claim the Vancouver Sevens title.

The South Africans scored six tries to overpower Spain 38-12 in the final and secure their third tournament victory in five events in this season’s SVNS series.

It also marked the fourth time the Blitzboks have lifted the Canada crown, following previous triumphs in 2019 and twice in 2021.

The South Africans had already shown their strength during the pool stage, beating Spain 28-7, Great Britain 21-5 and New Zealand 17-12 before edging Australia 19-12 in the semi-final.

In the final, the Blitzboks’ mix of defensive steel and attacking flair proved too much for Spain.

Ryan Oosthuizen opened the scoring after South Africa took a quick tap from a penalty, before Sebastiaan Jobb crossed in the corner to double the advantage.

The pressure kept building and SA Sevens Player of the Year Shilton van Wyk raced onto a clever kick ahead from Tristan Leyds to add a third try.

By half-time the Blitzboks were firmly in control at 17-0.

Their dominance at the breakdown and a key lineout steal frustrated Spain throughout the contest, and captain Impi Visser added a late try to cap a commanding victory.
