Another Bok to replace Williams?

The Sharks are lining up an experienced replacement for Grant Williams, and it could come in the form of a former Springbok.

According to Netwerk24, Ivan van Zyl is reportedly exploring a path back home, with the Durban-based club identifying him as a prime candidate to fill the void Williams will leave at the end of the season.

Williams’ contract expires in June and he is set to take up a deal in Japan, leaving the Sharks in need of proven depth at nine.

Van Zyl, 30, has been with English giants Saracens since 2021 after a six-year stint with the Bulls. Netwerk24 reports that despite being tied to a long-term deal abroad, a strong working relationship between Saracens and the Sharks could pave the way for an early release before 2027.

The Sharks are also bracing for Jaden Hendrikse’s likely international commitments after his call-up to the upcoming Springbok alignment camp in Cape Town. With Bradley Davids, Ross Braude and on-loan Tiaan Fourie the other scrumhalf options, experience is at a premium.

Van Zyl brings exactly that. The Pretoria-born halfback earned six Test caps in 2018 under Rassie Erasmus, with his last appearance coming against Wales in Cardiff.
