All Blacks bruiser returns to New Zealand

NZ Rugby has received a massive boost ahead of the 2027 World Cup with the news that one of its star forwards is set to return to Super Rugby.

Shannon Frizell will rejoin the Highlanders for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season after completing his stint in Japan.

The 33-Test loose forward’s NZ Rugby deal will see him return in mid-2026, making him eligible for provincial duty with Tasman and back in the frame for national selection.

Frizell has impressed for the Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo, helping the club secure back-to-back Japan Rugby League One titles since he moved there for the 2023-24 season.

A powerful ball-carrier with a strong lineout presence, the 32-year-old’s return is expected to add experience and physicality to the Highlanders pack – and is also good news for new All Blacks coach Dave Rennie.

His last All Blacks Test was the 2023 World Cup final against the Springboks where he started but was yellow-carded after only three minutes for a dangerous clearout of hooker Bongi Mbonambi. The Boks won the final 12-11.

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph welcomed the news, highlighting Frizell’s value.

“Shannon returning is a real bonus for the club. He knows our culture, works hard and will fit seamlessly into the environment,” he said.

Steve Lancaster, interim CEO of NZ Rugby, added: “Any time a player with international experience returns home, it’s a boost. It’s great to see Shannon’s desire to represent his province and country remains strong.”
