Smith: Lions brace for Benetton beast

Flyhalf Chris Smith says the Lions are preparing for a tough, Test-level battle against an international-laden Benetton in Treviso on Saturday.

The Pride remain winless after defeats to Cardiff and Zebre, but Smith insists “the mood is good” heading into their final tour fixture.

“We’ve woken up with a really positive mindset,” he said. “Obviously the results haven’t gone our way, and we’re disappointed, but that’s the beauty of this competition, there’s always another opportunity.

“Benetton are a quality side, stacked with internationals,” he added. “They know how to put you under pressure. It’s definitely going to be a pressure game, and hopefully we can match their Test-match intensity and bring our own version of that. We know the beast that lies ahead, but we’re definitely up for it.”

CASH: No time to sulk

The flyhalf, who joined the Lions from the Bulls this season, emphasised that winning away from home in the URC demands precision and patience.

“It’s a long competition. Winning away isn’t easy, you don’t just pick up a victory on tour.

“We know we need to be better, but we’re creating good pictures, and that’s keeping the group positive. Hopefully this weekend can be the turning point where we start building momentum.”

Smith also praised the growth of the Lions’ attacking combinations and his role in guiding a youthful, energetic group.

“We’ve got exciting backs alongside a young and dynamic pack. I’m here to serve and drive the team. My job is to direct them and give them the freedom to express themselves, play their natural game and show the exciting Lions’ brand of rugby we all know.”

Forward coach Barend Pieterse echoed that sentiment, saying the team’s focus remains on reducing errors.

“If we can fix the small mistakes, the results could look very different. There was improvement from Cardiff to Zebre, now we need to take the next step in Treviso.”
