All Blacks tower set to miss year-end tour

The All Blacks are likely to be without a star lock for their end-of-year tour, which underlines what has been a disruptive year with injuries for coach Scott Robertson.

Tupou Vaa’i was ruled out of the final Bledisloe Cup clash against the Wallabies in Perth after tearing his meniscus in training.

The 25-year-old forward, who had been named to start alongside captain Scott Barrett, confirmed the news on social media and admitted he’s “pretty sure” his 2025 season is over.

Vaa’i has become a key figure for the All Blacks under Robertson, offering versatility in both the second row and at blindside flank. His absence will be a major blow for New Zealand as they begin preparations for their end-of-year tour.

While Robertson initially told media that the squad had “got through the game without any injuries”, Vaa’i’s training-ground setback has added to a worrying list of sidelined players.

The All Blacks are already without Beauden Barrett (AC joint), Ollie Norris (back), and Caleb Clarke (ankle), while Tyrel Lomax, Emoni Narawa and Timoci Tavatavanawai remain out with longer-term issues.

A meniscus tear typically requires surgery and could rule Vaa’i out for several months, though no official timeline has been confirmed by New Zealand Rugby.

It’s another headache for Robertson, who has already had to juggle combinations throughout the campaign.
