Rassie: Boks showed massive fight

Rassie Erasmus says the Springboks took things to the gutters at Twickenham on Saturday to secure back-to-back Rugby Championship titles for the first time.

Erasmus’ men had to claw their way back from 13-3 down before half time and then hold off a late Pumas surge to clinch a 29-27 win that saw them finish above the All Blacks on points difference.

REPORT: Golden Boks make more history

“I’m satisfied with the result and winning the Rugby Championship back-to-back,” said Erasmus. “This was a massive game for us, and although it was a far from perfect performance, I would prefer to see us learn while we are winning than losing.

“We are still in a good position for the World Cup draw, but there’s no doubt we have five tough matches ahead [on the end-of-year tour] and a lot of work to do.

“The reality is that Argentina have beaten Australia, New Zealand and the British & Irish Lions, so we’ll celebrate tonight and take that positive.”

REINACH: Bok forwards to get lots of beer

The Bok boss praised his players’ fight and composure under pressure, while acknowledging the Pumas’ grit and attacking intent.

“We knew it would be tough,” Erasmus added. “At half time you could see the guys were tired, but Argentina played well. They played a loose game, we had a yellow card, and there were a few close calls that could have changed the game. But our guys showed massive fight – they can really take things to the gutters.”

SIYA: Rassie mindset key to Bok success

Captain Siya Kolisi echoed the sentiment, revealing that the Boks’ half-time message was about discipline and unity.

“It was simple,” he said. “We needed to play with more unity, make fewer mistakes, and concede fewer penalties. We knew Argentina would come out fighting, so we had to keep going until the end.”

Kolisi said the team’s resilience and collective mindset stem from the culture Erasmus built.

“We know how to fight as a team and dig deep – that’s thanks to coach Rassie and how he’s changed the way we think. This team has done a lot for the country, and I’m proud of the group and the coaches.

“This Rugby Championship was tough, and anyone could have won it, so to lift the trophy for the second time in a row is amazing. We’re grateful for all the support from the fans at the stadium and from our people at home.”
