Red Bull revamp: Diamond gone after one game

Steve Diamond has been sacked as Newcastle Red Bulls director of rugby just one match into the new English Premiership season.

Diamond, who joined the Falcons in January 2024 before the rebrand, departs after a turbulent spell in charge that saw the side win just two of 25 matches.

His final outing came in Friday night’s 39-17 defeat to Saracens at Kingston Park.

In a statement, the club thanked Diamond for his “passion, contribution and guidance” during what they described as an important transitional period.

Red Bull have wasted little time reshaping the club’s structure.

From 1 November, Neil McIlroy – formerly of Clermont and the Catalans Dragons – will become sporting general manager, overseeing all rugby operations.

Head coach Alan Dickens will now report directly to him.

Academy and youth development will be led by John Fletcher, who joins as pathways director on 1 December, while Jonny Petrie, a former Ulster CEO and Edinburgh managing director, will take charge of off-field operations as managing director from 6 October.

Newcastle’s squad will also be boosted by the arrival of ex-England wing Christian Wade in December as they look to recover from a difficult start.

Their next Premiership assignment is a trip to the Exeter Chiefs on Saturday.
