The All Blacks may have sealed the Bledisloe Cup for another year, but a former Test star believes the Rugby Championship is South Africa’s to lose after their demolition of Argentina.
Scott Robertson’s side edged Australia 33-24 at Eden Park on Saturday, yet the performance left former All Blacks winger Jeff Wilson far from convinced.
Speaking on The Breakdown, he admitted New Zealand’s inability to back up victories remains a glaring concern.
“I was in some ways a little bit underwhelmed in terms of the performance. Really stoked that we’ve put the Bledisloe Cup away, but I think I look at this game and I go, I’m not sure that we’ve moved a long way forward in terms of our performance,” Wilson said.
“You know, once again, we had a big lead and gave it away, then had to work really, really hard. Was it 28-24 with only minutes to go in a game.”

But it was the Springboks’ 67-30 dismantling of Argentina in Durban that sharpened Wilson’s perspective on where the Championship crown is heading.
“Look. I was feeling pretty good and then I watched South Africa play Argentina, and then I went, Ah, yeah, right. It’s gonna be really hard to win the Rugby Championship now.”
New Zealand travel to Perth this week for a rematch with the Wallabies, knowing that even a win may not be enough if the Boks take care of business against Argentina at Twickenham.
