Moodie: We’re hurting

Canan Moodie says the Springboks are ready to channel the hurt of their Ellis Park collapse into a statement performance when they face the Wallabies in Cape Town on Saturday.

The utility back, who has featured at both centre and wing, is likely to be included in Rassie Erasmus’ starting XV when the Bok coach names his match-23 on Tuesday. Moodie admitted that the squad had been stung by the 38-22 defeat in Johannesburg, but insists the blueprint for a turnaround is clear.

“Everyone is extremely disappointed, and we are hurting, but as coach Rassie said, we know what we have to do,” Moodie said.

“This week we need to stack the positives and ensure that we stick to our plans on the day.”

The Boks will head into the rematch without captain Siya Kolisi, who is sidelined with a knee injury, while Pieter-Steph du Toit is out with concussion. Wingers Kurt-Lee Arendse (knee) and Edwill van der Merwe (ankle) are also unavailable, forcing a reshuffle out wide.

There is, however, some good news with centre Damian de Allende and try machine Cheslin Kolbe cleared to return, while Jesse Kriel will captain the side in Kolisi’s absence.

Moodie, who could slot in at outside centre or on the wing, underlined the importance of getting the balance right after the Boks surrendered a 22-0 lead at Ellis Park.

“Our defence has to complement our attack and our kicking game has to be spot on this week, so this is an important week for us,” he said.

The Wallabies are in Cape Town buoyed by a rare win at Ellis Park, but Moodie believes the Springboks have the experience and depth to respond on home soil.

“With the backing of a Cape Town crowd, we know what’s at stake,” he said.

“It’s about getting the detail right and delivering a full 80-minute performance.”

Erasmus will confirm his match-23 on Tuesday, with significant changes expected as the world champions look to level the two-Test series.
