The Junior Springboks have reportedly not yet clinched the U20 Rugby Championship title, despite earlier celebrations of the achievement.
In the wake of Sunday’s 56-17 rout of Australia in Gqeberha, SA Rugby issued a release declaring the title won. Host broadcaster SuperSport ran a graphic showing a six-point gap between South Africa and second-placed New Zealand.
But the official SARU website showed a five-point gap and by Monday morning, the release had been amended to reflect that the title had been “all but sealed”.

The confusion stems from a rule change introduced by SANZAAR ahead of the 2026 tournament that, according to a report by Rugby365, was not communicated to key stakeholders until the second round was already underway.
It is understood that the amended log is accurate and the Junior Boks sit on 10 points after two rounds, with Argentina and New Zealand on five apiece.
For Argentina to overhaul SA, Los Pumitas would need to beat Australia by a substantial margin this Sunday. New Zealand would need to beat the Junior Boks convincingly while denying them any log points.
Kevin Foote’s charges remain strong favourites and lead the points-scoring table with 104 points, with a points difference of +66.
