Maro Itoje has backed the British & Irish Lions to explore new destinations, but says tradition must remain the foundation of what makes the touring side special.
Reports have emerged that the Lions are considering changes to their long-standing 12-year rotation model, which cycles tours between the three southern hemisphere nations.
France, Japan and the Americas are reportedly under consideration beyond 2029, when the Lions are scheduled to tour New Zealand. A return to South Africa is pencilled in for 2033.
Itoje, who led the Lions in Australia last year, told Sky Sports he is open to evolution but drew a clear line around the iconic series against South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.
OBERHOLZER: Tragic if Lions didn’t tour SA
“I think one of the great things about the Lions is its tradition,” the England skipper said. “I grew up watching the Lions play South Africa, play New Zealand, play Australia, and all great tours.”
“I think the Lions are expanding. There’s probably scope for the Lions to play games against France, play games in probably different regions of the world.
“But it’s about exploring new opportunities while remaining true to its traditional core,” Itoje added.
“Maybe a full-blown tour to France might be a good thing, or maybe just a one-off game before they go and play the traditional three nations.”
