English club Harlequins announced the signing of a South African forward for the 2026-2027 season.
Tighthead Ruan ‘Sampie’ Swiegers will make the move from the Pumas after their 2026 Currie Cup campaign, capping a steady rise through the domestic ranks.
Swiegers, 27, has taken the long road to the top. From Varsity Cup rugby at North West University – where he captained the side and lifted the title in 2023 – to provincial stints with the Leopards and Pumas, his progress has been built on consistency and hard graft.

His performances in Nelspruit have not gone unnoticed. A SA Cup winner in 2024, Swiegers also earned a call-up to a Springbok alignment camp and was later named the Pumas’ Currie Cup Forward of the Year. In 2026, he stepped into a leadership role as captain during their SA Cup campaign.
“I’m incredibly grateful and humbled to sign with Harlequins,” said Swiegers.
“This is a dream come true for me. I’ve worked hard for many years, often taking the long road, and there were times where things weren’t certain. But I never stopped believing or putting in the work.
“Playing rugby at the highest level has always been my goal, and to now have that opportunity with a club like Harlequins is something I don’t take for granted.”

Harlequins boss Jason Gilmore believes the Bok hopeful fits their long-term vision.
“Sampie’s got a good age profile and is moving into his peak years as a tighthead… He’s a big body, loves contact and the set-piece, so that bodes well for us.”
