Ireland circle around Aussie wonderkid

A cross-hemisphere tug-of-war is brewing for one of Australia’s brightest young prospects, with Ireland pushing hard to lure the rising tighthead.

Massimo De Lutiis, 22, who’s currently on the Reds’ books, is reportedly weighing up a lucrative offer from the Irish Rugby Football Union – a deal described as “life-changing”.

According to the Irish Independent, Ireland are keen to secure De Lutiis through his eligibility via his mother, as they look to bolster their tighthead stocks. The move would represent a significant coup, particularly with Australia building towards a home Rugby World Cup next year.

De Lutiis’ rapid rise has already caught the attention of top coaches on both sides of the divide. He was included in a Wallabies training environment under Joe Schmidt before even featuring at senior level for his club – underlining just how highly he is rated.

Ireland, meanwhile, have already brought him into a January international camp, further intensifying the battle for his long-term allegiance.

However, any potential switch is not without complications. The powerful front ranker has already represented Australia A, which could impact his eligibility pathway.

The timing only adds to the intrigue, with Australia set to face Ireland in their opening Test of 2026 in Sydney – a clash that could yet carry added significance depending on where De Lutiis’ future lies.
