Ospreys bruiser hit with three-match ban

Ross Moriarty will miss a crucial stretch of fixtures after being handed a three-match suspension following his red card in the Vodacom URC.

The Ospreys No 8 was sent off in the 63rd minute of their round 13 clash against Benetton last Saturday for dangerous play at the breakdown.

Referee Ian Kenny deemed the offence to fall under Law 9.20a, which prohibits charging into a ruck or maul without binding.

A disciplinary panel upheld the red card decision.

Moriarty accepted that he had committed an act of foul play, with the panel ruling that the incident met the threshold for a red card. A mid-range entry point of six weeks was applied, but this was reduced by 50% due to his good disciplinary record, remorse and conduct throughout the process – resulting in a three-week ban.

Should Moriarty complete the World Rugby Coaching Intervention Programme, his suspension will be reduced by one additional week.

As it stands, the Welsh forward is set to miss three key fixtures against Connacht, the EPCR Challenge Cup last-16 clash against Ulster and the Challenge Cup quarter-final should the team progress.
